Catphan MV and kV Therapy Phantoms | Image Quality QA for CBCT

Catphan MV and kV Therapy Phantoms | Image Quality QA for CBCT

The Catphan MV and kV therapy series is a family of CT phantoms designed for cone-beam CT and megavoltage imaging systems used in image-guided radiotherapy. Models include the Catphan 503, 504, 604, and 606, each tailored to a specific linac or imaging platform. They combine kV test objects with large-diameter slice geometry wires and high-signal MTF point sources to compensate for lower contrast in MV images.

Key Features:

  • Models suited to kV and MV CBCT and radiotherapy imaging systems
  • Large-diameter slice geometry wires for MV image visibility
  • High-signal MTF point source to offset reduced MV contrast
  • Key geometry and sensitometry tests placed near the center to reduce scatter-related variation in cone-beam systems
  • Low-contrast and spatial resolution modules for IGRT image quality
  • Uniformity module for noise and spatial uniformity testing
  • Smári web-based automated analysis available

Models:

  • Catphan 503: distributed through Elekta to support commissioning of the XVI kV imager
  • Catphan 504: selected by Varian Medical Systems for commissioning and QA of the OBI kV imager
  • Catphan 604: distributed through Varian for OBI kV imager commissioning and QA
  • Catphan 606: designed for MV and kV CT, with combined kV test objects and MV-optimized features

Applications:

  • Commissioning and QA of kV imagers on linear accelerators
  • Cone-beam CT image quality and CT number verification
  • MV CBCT and portal imaging quality assessment
  • Spatial resolution, low-contrast, and uniformity testing for IGRT
  • Geometric accuracy and alignment verification in image-guided treatment

Specifications:

  • Compatible systems: Varian OBI, Elekta XVI, and other kV and MV CBCT platforms
  • Test sections: low-contrast module (CTP730 in Catphan 606), high-resolution gauge, uniformity module, and sensitometry inserts
  • Analysis: Smári cloud-based software available
