Radiation protection refers to the set of practices, equipment, and engineering controls used to keep radiation exposure to staff, patients, and the public within safe limits while still allowing radioisotopes and radiation generating equipment to be used for diagnosis and treatment. It matters because ionizing radiation has no smell, sound, or visible presence, so without proper protection measures, exposure can go completely unnoticed until harm has already occurred.

Radiation protection is built around three core principles: time, distance, and shielding. Reducing the time spent near a radiation source, increasing distance from it, and placing adequate shielding material such as lead or tungsten between the source and the person all work together to bring down exposure. This approach is commonly referred to as ALARA, meaning exposure should be kept As Low As Reasonably Achievable.

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) is the primary regulatory body governing radiation safety in India. Any facility handling radioisotopes, Linacs, Cobalt units, or other radiation sources is required to meet AERB guidelines on shielding, monitoring, personnel dosimetry, and equipment calibration.
