Radiotherapy bunkers rely on thick primary and secondary structural shielding to contain high energy radiation from the Linac or Cobalt unit, combined with engineering safety devices, warning lights, door interlocks, and area monitors placed both inside and outside the room to alert staff to unsafe radiation levels.
Meditronix also offers custom made shielding solutions to fill the specific gaps a bunker design may have. In facilities where a lead lined door is required, we supply custom size lead sheets cut to match the exact thickness your room design calls for, so the sheet can be fitted into the door without rework on site. For high energy Linacs that generate neutrons, lead alone is not effective since neutrons pass through dense metal far more easily than gamma rays. In these areas, HDPE (high density polyethylene) sheets are used instead, since the high hydrogen content in HDPE slows down and absorbs neutrons effectively. Meditronix can supply HDPE sheets in custom sizes for exactly this purpose, alongside our standard lead based shielding products.
The Last Man Out switch is a radiation therapy room safety device that ensures no person remains inside the treatment room when the beam is activated. It requires the last person leaving the room to confirm the room is clear before the machine can be enabled, acting as a critical safety checkpoint built into the workflow itself.
Its most important function, however, comes into play during treatment itself. If the treatment room door is opened accidentally or unexpectedly while the beam is on, the LMO switch immediately interrupts power to the unit, stopping the Linac, Cobalt, or brachytherapy machine instantly. This makes it one of the last lines of defense against accidental radiation exposure, working alongside door interlocks and area monitors to keep the room safe at every stage of treatment.
Staff exposure in radiotherapy is tracked using personal dosimeters such as pocket dosimeters or electronic personal dosimeters and fixed area monitors near the bunker entrance and console room provide continuous real time monitoring of ambient radiation levels.
